Marc Ferro or A Passion For History

By

Michel Vuillermet & Ilios Yannakakis

This documentary is a portrait of Marc Ferro, writer, documentary filmmaker and creator of television programs. He was part of the French resistance, and fought in the Vercors maquis. He was also a privileged witness to the awakening of national consciousness in North Africa and to the reality of the Soviet world. His life experiences have nourished his thinking and have inspired his work. Marc Ferro recounts how his encounter with Fernand Braudel has influenced him and directed him in his research. It was Baudel who asked Ferro to become part of the staff of Annales, a review specialized in the historical sciences throughout the world. Ferro explains his work methods, in which he continually strives to separate historical analysis from ideology, and where he practices experimental history alongside factual history in order to compare various kinds of documents and sources of information.
